　大学院人文学研究科博士前期課程では、映像学を、日本語中心のプログラム（下記および映像学）か、または英語中心のプログラム（G30: Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program）のどちらかに所属して学修・研究することができます。博士後期課程では、日本語中心のプログラム（下記および映像学）か、またはイギリスのウォリック大学との共同の英語中心のプログラム（Nagoya-Warwick Co-Tutelle PhD Programme in Global Screen Studies）のどちらかに所属して指導を受けながら研究することができます。これらの日本語中心のプログラムと英語中心のプログラムは、共同で運営されており、合同で演習やイベントを行っています。

　The Graduate School of Humanities offers two MA programs in Cinema Studies: a Japanese language program in Cinema Studies/Eizogaku (also see below) and an English language program offered by the G30 Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program. It also offers two PhD programs in Cinema Studies: a Japanese language program in Cinema Studies/Eizogaku (also see below) and an English language program in collaboration with the University of Warwick, the Nagoya-Warwick Co-Tutelle PhD Programme in Global Screen Studies. Both the Japanese and English programs are associated with each other and work closely together on collaborative events, such as joint seminars, on a regular basis.

　映像学は、2017年4月の人文学研究科の発足とともに設置された新しい専門分野である。英語圏では、1970年代以降Film StudiesやCinema Studiesといった名称で多くの大学に学科や講座が設けられ、いまではほとんどの大学で映像の理論や歴史に関する授業科目が教えられている。日本でも近年注目されてきており、映像学に関する講座や授業科目を設置する大学が増えつつある。

　とはいえ、一口に映像学といっても、さまざまな形態やアプローチがあり、それはそれぞれの大学の方針によって異なっている。名古屋大学では、まず第1に、理論的・歴史的に広い見地から映像を捉えることを重視している。すなわち、映像の生産、流通、上映、表象、受容に関わる多様な側面を、歴史的・社会的・政治的・経済的・文化的・テクノロジー的・エコロジー的文脈を視野に入れながら、実証的・理論的に研究することを大きなヴィジョンとして掲げている。具体的な研究対象としては、映像批評理論、映画史、各国・地域映画、初期映画、越境映画、合作映画、インディペンダント映画、映像文化（ジェンダー、エスニシティ、モダニティ、記憶、エコロジーなど）、ジャンル（ドキュメンタリー、アニメーションを含む）、スター、映画祭、観客、メディア産業、検閲、トランスメディア、デジタル映像、映像アーカイヴ、映像教育、テレビ、写真などが挙げられる。

　第2に、私たちの映像学の特徴として、東アジアに重点を置いている点がある。英語圏のCinema Studiesは、欧米の映画を中心に発展してきた傾向にあるが、私たちはそれを東アジアの観点から見直すことを一つの大きな目標にしている。また、東アジア地域は、帝国主義・植民地主義や冷戦を経ながら政治的な軋轢と分断の歴史を歩んできたが、私たちの研究は、そうした歴史のさまざまな問題点を再検証するとともに、それらを克服するようなトランスナショナルなネットワークやトランスローカルなネットワークの構築の可能性を探究することも一つの大きなねらいとしている。（ただし、東アジア以外の映像作品・現象を主要な研究テーマにすることも可能。）

　そして第3に、私たちの映像学は国際的な環境にあるというのも大きな特徴である。授業科目は、日本語だけでなく英語でも教えられている。毎年国際シンポジウムが開かれ、先端的な研究を行っている国内外の研究者と触れ合うことができる。また、院生たちには海外での研究集会で口頭発表の機会が与えられることもある。教員は皆、海外での研究・教育経験が豊富であり、留学生もさまざまな国から来ている。

　これらの点で、名古屋大学の映像学は他に類を見ない特色がある。学部で映像学以外の専門分野を専攻している（専攻していた）方も受験を歓迎したい。

　Cinema Studies is a new academic program that was established in April 2017 as part of the newly revamped Graduate School of Humanities. In the Anglophone world, universities and colleges began to set up departments and/or courses in film studies (or cinema studies, screen studies, etc.) in the 1970s, and now almost all academic institutions offer courses on the theory and history of cinema and other audio-visual media. In Japan, cinema studies has drawn increasing attention in recent years, with specialized courses and programs becoming widely available at the university level.

　Since cinema studies comes with a variety of approaches, each program develops a unique focus based on university policies and curricula. The Cinema Studies program at Nagoya University places emphasis on three primary areas. First, it seeks to understand cinema and audio-visual media from a broad theoretical and historical perspective. More specifically, it takes a multi-focal approach to film and other audio-visual media that pays attention to production, distribution and circulation, exhibition, and reception, while also considering historical, social, political, economic, cultural, technological, and ecological contexts. Some of the areas of specialization the program covers include cinema criticism and theory, cinema history, national and regional cinema, early cinema, transnational cinema, coproduction, independent cinema, cinema and culture (including issues of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, modernity, memory, and ecology), genre (including documentary and animation), stardom, film festivals, audience/spectatorship, media industries, censorship, transmedia, digital cinema, archives, screen education, television, and photography.

　Second, our program places a strategic emphasis on East Asia even though we welcome and encourage research projects focusing on cinema and media in other regions. While Anglophone cinema studies has tended to focus on Euro-American films, it is our program's goal to reexamine its tenets from an East Asian perspective. In the face of a plethora of historical issues surrounding East Asia, including political conflicts and divisions arising from imperialism, colonialism, or the Cold War, our researches seek to reframe these issues and to overcome them by (re)constructing transnational and translocal networks.

　Lastly, our program takes pride in its international and cosmopolitan environment. Cinema Studies courses are offered in Japanese and in English, and students have the option to write their theses or dissertations in Japanese or English. In collaboration with the University of Warwick, UK, we also offer a PhD Programme in Global Screen Studies. Our program regularly hosts international symposia, workshops, and academic events that give students and faculties ample networking opportunities not only with Japan-based researchers, but also those working overseas. In addition, students may find opportunities to present at conferences abroad. All of our faculty members have ample experiences in research and teaching overseas, and our students come from various countries.
